Managing Stress: Hypnosis for Relaxation
Stress is very often, if not always, associated with fatigue after a heightened state of alarm in what we call the fight or flight response. When a person stays too long under circumstances that he or she cannot keep under control, cannot cope or keep up with, his or her body exerts extra effort for her sake. This extra effort, however, has side effects in a way that it leaves the body in a lesser state than before the stress response. During this bodily reaction, fatigue is not felt. After the adrenalin subsides, the person then feels tired.
Chronic stress can lead to a lot of health problems. For one, it is associated with heart disease. Mental disorders can also arise. Being in the fight or flight response for too long can get someone paranoid. Too much anxiety over what can happen the next day can develop further into panic disorders. Too much thinking about a lot of things can lead to the development of obsessive and compulsive behavior. For these reasons, stress management is given a lot of importance. A lot of the stress management techniques involve relaxation. For some people, there's nothing better than relaxing at home after a hard day’s work.
One of the most known methods of relaxation is yoga. Yoga is more than a thousand year old spiritual practice that promotes well being. Westerners turned yoga from a spiritual practice into more of an exercise for relaxation, anger management, stress management, or even improve fertility. Postures and breathing exercises can bring about a relaxed state. Meditation is another practice wherein you try shut everything out so you can find inner peace. But there are individuals who have been stressed out long enough that they are finding it difficult to relax. Even practicing yoga can take some time to relax these individuals.
At this point, hypnosis becomes an option. A lot of individuals think that hypnosis is a joke. But there are a lot of established psychologists who have dug deeper into the idea. Sigmund Freud in his early days wrote articles on it. Mainstream culture depicts hypnotism as an act of putting someone in a zombie-like state to do your every bidding. Hypnotism isn’t far from that. The hypnotised may not jump over a cliff even if you say so, but is very open to suggestion.
If you are one of those people who can’t seem to relax, you might want to try hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state where you would be physically relaxed. Mentally, you become more open to suggestions. Your therapist can suggest a lot of relaxation techniques for you while you are under the trance. Once you snap out of it, you retain those suggestions made for you and do them as if you’ve done them for a very long time. Hypnosis can be used to relax, or to be more open to suggestions of relaxation methods. If you’ve had too much stress that you can’t stay still, try hypnotherapy.
