Running out of wall space for your little Picasso? Have your kid’s drawings beaten grocery lists out for refridgerator door space? If you’ve used all available refridgerator and bulletin board space, don’t worry! There are lots of ways to display your children’s artwork.

Step 1 is to create digital files of your young artist’s drawing, painting or print. So, if anything happens to the original artwork, you’ll still have a copy on file that you can reproduce and enjoy for many years. You’ll need to scan the original artwork. No scanner? No problem. Any copy or photo business will scan your items and put them on a disk for you. If you are using a copy service to scan your artwork, it’s a good idea to grab several pieces and have them all doen at the same time.

The resolution of the images is important and what you choose depends on what you want to use them for and the final size they need to be. The DPI, or dots per inch, refers to the physical size of an image when it is reproduced on paper or displayed on a monitor. Any image that is to be used on a printed piece such as a bag, mousepad or mug needs to be scanned at a high resolution of 150 dpi or higher. If the images will stay on a computer screen or end up on a website, 72 dpi will be plenty.

If you’re not sure how you will use the images, always scan them at the highest quality available.

A flatbed scanner work best for digitizing artwork. Taking a photo of the piece doesn’t work as well. The scanner presses the artwork flat and the light source is even across the entire surface of the piece so it will look as much like the original as possible.

Once you have your artwork on a disk, the possibilities are endless.

• Make a computer “wallpaper†or screensaver
• Imprint a mug or hat
• Have a photo bag or photo purse made
• Have it made into a jigsaw puzzle

• Have the picture put on a mousepad

There are several companies that will imprint the art onto a huge variety of items for you. Many companies have online stores that make it easy to upload your file. They will re-size it for you to create your item.

But more and more couples are feeling the pinch of the recession now, and are looking for a way of getting married on a budget, without spoiling any of the magic of the occasion. Among the drastic measures being taken are asking guests to help with food or music, trimming down invitations to close friends and family only, and the idea of a ‘pre-worn wedding dress’ has appeared in recent years, which was unheard of just 10 years ago. Hiring a wedding photographer is one area where a lot of brides and grooms are not, however, willing to cut corners, and rightly so. Another tip is dont just settle for the most obvious phrases when you’re searching - try a few different searches, being sure to look at surrounding towns and regions as many photographers are willing to travel to cover a wedding. My wife and I live in Sussex, and when looking for our photographer we not only searched “Wedding Photographer Brighton“, we also made sure to look for photographers in London, Kent and Hampshire.

2. Watch Out for Hidden Costs

Gone are the days when your wedding photographer had to develop their own prints in a darkroom - its all digital now. Which means that the wedding photography pricing are a lot more simple now too. Yet many photographers are still working off the model of charging couples for each print they want after the wedding - that’s an additional cost on top of what you’ve already paid for their time! Always look for photographers willing to give you all the images from the day on CD. Like this you can choose which prints you want to get done at leisure and get them printed for relatively low cost.

3. Optional Extras and Photo Books - DIY!

With digital photography the era of the traditional wedding photo album has passed. Nowadays modern photobooks are now the norm and extremely popular - but with a lot of wedding photographers adding these on to your package significantly increases the overall cost. Yet if you’re willing to make a little effort yourself and you have some creative flair, there are many photobook services now where you can design one at home and get them printed at bargain prices. The same goes for things like canvas prints and enlargements - all you really need are the original high res images!

4. Be Wary of Wedding Photography Scams

Everyon’e heard a story about a couple who got scammed by a so-called “photographer” who ran off with their money. These swindlers will poach couples with cheap prices and slick sales pitches, receive their deposits or even full booking payments and then never be heard from again. They are truly tragic and horrible stories. The thing is, if you’re vigilant they’re pretty easy to spot and avoid. Firstly, ensure that any payment of deposits or fees are done via bank transfer - its the most secure method of payment, and can be traced and reversed in the event of a problem. Also make sure you get a legally binding contract from the photographer which states clearly what you are getting for your money and will protect you. And lastly, just make sure you have your radar up - try and visit the photographer, see lots of examples of his work and ask lots of questions.

5. Dont Go Over the Top!

My last tip is perhaps the opposite of a moneysaving one, but just as important as the others. I know you’re trying to save money but it it possible to take that overboard! Like I said, the photography is quite possibly THE most important part of your wedding, especially when you look back. There are hundreds of amateur and inexperienced ‘photographers’ out there who are trying their luck as a side income. By focusing purely on the price you could be misled into thinking these offer a great deal. But often the real bargains are to be found by going up a level in pricing. The bottom line is this: if you look at your photographer’s previous work and it doesnt make you go “wow” then is it really worth paying for a professional?
